Bangladesh’s container ship operator HR Lines Limited, a subsidiary of shipowner Karnaphuli Group, will expand its connectivity with regional transhipment hubs with the procurement of up to six boxships, each having a capacity of around 1,550TEU, in the coming months. With the acquisition of more ships to its fleet in 2021, HR Lines will expand services between Chattogram and the region’s transhipment hubs. Since June last year, HR Lines’ two container vessels, Sahare and Sarera, with a capacity of 1,550TEU each, have been operating on the Chattogram–Singapore-Port Klang-Chattogram route.

In June last year, after a decade, two local vessels began carrying container shipments for import and exporting. This proved to be a success and this year four new vessels carrying the national flag will take to the sea. The present two vessels are owned by Karnaphuli Limited and operated by its subsidiary company HR Lines. Since inception, these two ships have carried 660, 396 units of containers at the first eight months of the 2020-21 fiscal. This brought in revenue of USD12 million, equivalent to around Tk 1 billion in local currency, for Karnaphuli Ltd. This is adding to the export income of the sea cargo transport service sector.

এক দশক পর গত বছরের জুনের শেষে দুটি দেশি জাহাজে আমদানি-রপ্তানি পণ্যবাহী কনটেইনার পরিবহন শুরু হয়। এতে সফলতার আসায় চলতি বছরে সমুদ্রে ভাসতে চলছে লাল-সবুজ পতাকাবাহী আরও চারটি নতুন জাহাজ। বর্তমানে যে দুটি দেশীয় জাহাজ রপ্তানিমুখী কনটেইনার নিয়ে বিদেশে যাচ্ছে, সেগুলো কর্ণফুলী লিমিটেডের । জাহাজ দুটি পরিচালনা করছে গ্রুপটির  সহযোগী প্রতিষ্ঠান এইচআর লাইনস । চালুর পর থেকে চলতি ২০২০ -২১ অর্থবছরের প্রথম ৮ মাসে ওই ২টি জাহাজে ৬৬ হাজার ৩৯৬ একক কনটেইনার পরিবহন হয়েছে। এসব কনটেইনার পরিবহনের বিপরীতে ভাড়া বাবদ গ্রুপটির  আয় করেছে ১ কোটি ২০ লাখ মার্কিন ডলার, যা দেশীয় মুদ্রায় প্রায় ১০২ কোটি টাকা । সমুদ্র পন্য পরিবহন সেবা খাতের রপ্তানি আয় হিসেবে যোগ হচ্ছে তা।

Within a year of stepping into container feeder vessels operation between Chattogram and two regional hub ports, Karnaphuli Ltd is going to buy four more ships to expand its footprint in the region. HR Lines Ltd, a subsidiary of Karnaphuli Ltd, is set to inaugurate a weekly service on the Chattogram-Colombo route by March with two vessels to be deployed under the name of Chattogram-Colombo Express (CCE).
